How a Wisconsin Electrician Got Ranked #1 on Google Maps Without a Website
Overview
Business: May Electric LLC
Location: Wautoma, WI
Service: Google Business Profile Optimization
Project Type: Pro bono
Goal: More calls from local customers searching on Google, with no website to rely on
May Electric LLC is a local electrician serving homeowners around Wautoma. The owner wanted more calls from people searching online but had one major limitation: no website. That meant the Google Business Profile wasn’t just part of the strategy, it was the entire online presence. If it didn’t perform, nothing did.
Why I Took This On
I completed this project pro bono. The owner is a childhood friend who once helped my wife with a fan installation, and I wanted to return the favor. It also let me put my Google Business Profile optimization process to work on a real local business and measure what it could do on its own, without a website backing it up.
The Problem
Before optimization, the profile was leaving calls on the table:
- Barely visible in Google Maps for local electrician searches
- Incomplete profile with missing business details
- Few photos and little ongoing activity
- Not enough reviews to build trust or earn clicks
- Business information inconsistent across the web
And with no website, there was no second chance. A homeowner who didn’t find the profile, or didn’t trust it, simply called someone else. The profile had to carry the entire load.
What I Did
I built the profile into a complete, accurate, trustworthy listing that Google could confidently show to local searchers:
- Selected the correct primary and secondary categories
- Added services with clear descriptions
- Corrected business hours and core details
- Added real job photos to show credibility
- Cleaned up Name, Address, and Phone consistency across the web
- Set up a process for asking customers for reviews
- Added regular posts and activity to keep the profile fresh
Each step helped Google better understand who the business serves and why it deserved to show up. Here’s how Google Business Profiles work if you want the background.
The Results
The profile went from nearly invisible to ranking #1 in Google Maps for “electrician” and “electrician near me” in the Wautoma area, the two searches that matter most for an electrician SEO, owned outright.
The owner confirmed the phone was ringing more often with local customers who found the business on Google. This wasn’t a controlled experiment, and I won’t pretend it was. But the result is clear and verifiable: top of the map pack for the searches that bring in work, achieved on the strength of the profile alone, with no website in the picture. For a business that was close to invisible online weeks earlier, that’s a real change.

What This Means for Your Business
- You don’t need a website to start getting calls from Google. A strong profile can carry a local service business on its own.
- A fully optimized Google Business Profile beats a half-finished one every time, more visibility, more trust, more calls.
- Profiles aren’t “set it and forget it.” Consistent photos, posts, and updates are what hold and grow your ranking.
- The businesses that show up in the map pack aren’t always the best in town. They’re the ones whose profile gives Google a reason to trust them.
Where It Would Go Next
If the work continued, the next priorities would be:
- A structured review-building system to deepen trust
- Fresh job-site photos added every month
- Ongoing posts and profile activity
Each one would push visibility and calls further.
